Hongxiuqiu

Liu, 1959, Chungkuo Chuming Tichi Chung Hua Hui: A medium sized, full peony red. Originated in China. The name refers to an old Chinese game played with an embroidered ball and refers to the shape of the flower.

Hongxiuqiu.(Camellia japonica)  Synonym: None  Originate: Chongqing  Characteristics: Plant habit vigorous, crown compact as conic shape, upright, with good growth in branches with small branching angles, good pruning in central canopy. Leaves broadly elliptical to almost rounded, apex apiculate, base broad obtuse, measured 8 cm to 10 cm across by 4 cm to 4.5 cm wide, dark green, serration dense and tiny, main venation protrude, Surface flat. Sepals open. Petals flat, imbricated in 2-3 rows, outer petals relatively short, about 10 segments. Petaloids of almost stamens with a protrude centre, mixed with occasional wavy large petals, arranged as semi-globose, peony double, dark red, anemone form, with diameter 8 cm to 11 cm wide, medium in floral quantity. Blooming February to April, with full bloom in March.  Key points of identification: Crown compact as conic shape, shoot upright. Leaf broadly elliptical.

红绣球 Camellia japonica ‘Hongxiuqiu’。张永和等1985《永福茶花》第14页。(又名:赛牡丹）小乔木，树形直立匀称，分枝粗硬，多花。叶长6-8厘米，宽4-4.5厘米，披针或椭圆形，梢渐尖；叶面绿色，中折；主脉明显，侧脉隐；质厚；叶缘锯齿浅细；柄长0.8-1.2厘米。花径10-11厘米，红色，六片一轮花瓣当中有280-290片小瓣丛生成球状。花期：十月至次年三月。

周利主编、2011《川茶品种图鉴》 p.90。树势强健，树冠紧凑，呈锥形柱状，成枝力强，分枝角度小，枝姿直立向上，易内秃；叶阔椭圆形近圆形，先端短尖，基部宽楔形，叶长8cm10cm，宽4cm-5.5cm,叶色深绿，叶脉外凸，叶齿细密明显，主侧脉隆起，叶片平展；花萼开张，外层花瓣较短，2轮-3轮平展，约10枚，雄蕊完全瓣化，花心高耸，中心夹有少量大曲瓣，排列紧凑，呈半球状，花大红色，托桂型，花径8cm-11cm,花量中等，开花期2月-4月，盛花期3月。识别特征：紧凑，枝姿直立向上呈椎柱状。叶阔椭圆形。原始产地：重庆。
