Williams Nursery Catalogue, 1891, p.42: Flowers 8-10 cm across, double, petals broad and good shape, nearly white but spotted and splashed with rose towards the centre. van Houtte Pere Catalogue, 1898, 275: 203: Almost double, of a snow white, sometimes faintly streaked with carmine. Puddle & Hanger, 1961, RHS., The Rhododendron and Camellia Yearbook, No.15, pp.116, 117: Semi-double, white, lightly blotched and flecked with carmine (HCC.21/1) 8.5-9 cm across, petals, 15-18, 4 cm x 4 cm, central petals smaller and sometimes broadly ovate, forming a campanulate flower. Stamens conjoined in clusters of 14 or 15, with one or two petaloids. Leaves elliptic, 8 cm long x 3.4-4.0 cm wide, relatively coarsely serrate, long-acuminate or acuminate, deep glossy green on a plant of spreading, bushy habit. Introduced from Japan by Gerald Waller, first distributed by L. van Houtte and B.S. Williams. Sports: Lady McCulloch Pink, Lady McCulloch Carmine.
