Nicholson, 1900, The Supplement to the Dictionary of Gardening; G., W.H. Garden Flora, 1889, The Garden, 36(930):247: A mutation of the variable camellia cultivar Hikarugenji from which it differs only by the regular white border to the petals, which is not crossed by any rose coloured streaks as in Hikarugenji. It was introduced from Japan by Mr Gerald Waller. Note the camellia known as Mikado is a different cultivar, being a Magnolia Gardens, South Carolina, introduction. Synonyms: ‘Herme Sport Number 4’, ‘The Emperor of Japan’.
