Prof. Min Tianlu (闵天禄 Ming Tien-lu) was born on 8 December 1937 in SE Yunnan’s Luoping county, a taxonomist doctoral supervisor and professor of the Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, had passed away in Kunming on 25 February 2021 at the age of 84.
Prof. Min Tianlu has been engaged in seed plant systematics and geography for forty years. He was the famous taxonomist on the families Theaceae, Ericaceae and Anacardiaceae et. al. He was one of authors for many taxonomy related books, like Flora of China , Flora of Yunnan, Flora of Tibet, Illustrated Book of Higher Plants of China, and Encyclopedia of China.
On camellia taxonomy, he published more than 30 papers and some books, like Monograph of the genus Camellia (世界山茶属的研究 2000), Flora of China, vol.12 (英文版中国植物志 2007), Flora Yunnanica, tomus 8: Theaceae (云南植物志 1997). Chinese Camellia Culture (中国茶花文化 2003).
The book Monograph of the Genus Camellia (2000) was his major work on the researches of camellia, which was considered as one of the three major camellia classification systems in the history of camellia studies. The other two camellia classification systems was established by J. Robert Sealy in 1958 and Zhang Hongda (H. T. Chang) in 1981.
