Gerbings Azalea Gardens Catalogue, 1941-1942: A new camellia from Middleton Gardens (Middleton No.13). A loosely formed peony type flower of the deepest red with petals of crepe-like texture. The petaloids of the 10 cm flower are intermingled with stamens. Growth is tall and the deep green leaves are noticeably long. Late flowering. A chance seedling discovered at Middleton Gardens, South Carolina, USA by Campbell Ashley after whom it was named. Registration No.42 with the ACS.
