Loddiges Catalogue, 1826, p.21. No description. Courtois, 1833, Magazin d’Horticulture, p.312: Semi-double, spatulate flower, bright purplish red, with sone narrow, rose petaloids and normal stamens. Berlèse, 1837, Monographie, ed.1, pp.89, 95, 128 as ‘Spatulata’: Leaves rather large; buds with dark yellow scales; flower large, single, cherry-red; petals elongate, bifid, spatulate, channelled with the apex a little recurved. Fertile. Originated in England. See pl.143, Berlèse, 1843, Iconographie. Orthographic variants: ‘Spathulata’, ‘Spathulate’. Ortho­graphic errors: ‘Spatullata’, ‘Spatulatae’, ‘Spathula’.
