Luzhou Dahong

Zhou Li, 2011, Illustrated Handbook for Sichuan Camellias, p.128. Plant growth vigorous, open. Leaves dark green, elliptic, measured 8 cm to 10 cm across by 4.5 cm to 5 cm wide, with apex apiculate and reflexed, base obtuse, flat, serrate deeply and sparsely. Calyxes are opening. Flowers bright red. Outer normal petals rounded, imbricated in 1-2 rows, about 12 segments, thinner texture, crinkled, diameter 8 cm to 9 cm. Petaloids by some stamens, small and irregular, imbricated irregularly, folded little petaloids with normal stamens in globose, peony double form, medium floral abundance. Blooming January to April, with fully blooming in March.  Key points of identification: Easily confused with variety ‘Luzhou Erhong’，petals thinner and crinkled. Petaloids by stamens, mixed with stamens in globose in centre.
